In Cancun, abandoned buildings and businesses will be rescued in order to improve the urban image of the city. The above, through the Secretariat of Urban Development of Benito Juárez, which initiated an intervention plan in different parts of the city and the hotel zone, reported its head, Nahielli Orozco.
The official explained that these actions are carried out in coordination with the Trust for the Strengthening of Tourism Activity of Quintana Roo (Foatrqroo), with the purpose of identifying the owners of abandoned properties and premises and promoting walling, rehabilitation or remodeling work.
Orozco explained that it is expected that the first advances of the program will begin to be reflected in a period of about two months, once the processes of identification, contact with owners, and definition of the necessary interventions are concluded.
He indicated that several buildings have already been detected in abandoned conditions, some of which have been demolished or partially intervened, as part of preventive actions to avoid risks and improve the urban environment.
The secretary pointed out that work is currently being done on the formation of an inter-institutional council, made up of different municipal agencies, with the aim of establishing clear guidelines and regulations that allow acting in an orderly manner and with legal support. This body will allow the follow-up of the cases and prevent that, after a first intervention, the properties are abandoned again.
One of the main challenges of the program, Orozco Lozano explained, is the location of the owners, since in many cases they do not reside in Cancun. However, he affirmed that communication is maintained with them to generate agreements that allow a comprehensive improvement of the spaces. The actions will begin in strategic areas, such as the city center and the hotel zone, where tours and information gatherings have already been carried out.
As reported by REPORTUR.mx, in February 2025, Foatqroo has identified 15 points with abandoned buildings in the hotel zone of Cancun, so it is looking for strategies so that the owners can rescue them and thus improve the urban image.
