Outside the venue where Shakira’s concert is being held today, February 27, a protest is taking place demanding justice for the death of Iván Varela Chávez, who was run over near the GNP Stadium in the Iztacalco borough.
The protesters gathered at Gate 6 of the Autódromo sports complex to demand that the authorities not let the case go unpunished. With banners and slogans, they blocked the Viaduct, causing severe traffic chaos.
This was exacerbated by the traffic generated by the Colombian singer’s show. As a result, officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) dispersed the family and friends of Iván Varela.
The father of the young man who lost his life in the accident, Marco Antonio Varela, told N+ that his only objective is to bring attention to the case.
We are here to demand increased safety measures for all athletes who come here because the company does not provide security for its employees.
He also stated that his son’s death was due to negligence on the part of a concert organizer, and they are not receiving adequate sanctions.
My son Iván died, and they continue playing music at excessive speeds and in the wrong direction, showing no respect for athletes.
Iván Varela Chávez was 28 years old and a high-performance athlete. According to his family, he was training for a competition on the day of the accident.
Two years ago, a crane belonging to the OCESA group killed my nephew, Iván Varela Chávez, who was 28 years old and training for a triathlon at the racetrack.
They also indicated that Iván was training during a suitable time, however, the crane operator ran him over.
For the past two years, efforts have been made to ensure that drivers take responsibility and properly maintain their vehicles so that this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
After remaining in the protest area for several minutes, the group of demonstrators dispersed. Shakira’s concert at the GNP Stadium today continues without incident.
Regarding the incident, the Secretariat of Citizen Security reported:
Metropolitan Police personnel from the SSCA responded to the Río Piedad Viaduct in the Iztacalco borough due to the presence of 25 people who were blocking traffic in both directions. They formed a containment line and moved the demonstrators to the sidewalk area so they could be assisted.
