The famous fisherman’s jewels will be exhibited again in Veracruz, announced Porfirio Castro, director of San Juan de Ulúa.

In an interview with XEU, he reported that the gold jewelry will be part of the exhibitions being prepared at the San Juan de Ulúa fortress in conjunction with the World Cup in June.

He recalled that the famous fisherman’s jewels are a collection of gold jewelry that a fisherman found while octopus hunting and that were recovered by the government. For a long time, they were exhibited at the Baluarte de Santiago, but since its closure for restoration, they have been safeguarded by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

Porfirio Castro recounted that the fisherman took the jewelry to a jeweler who, knowing they were valuable pieces, melted them down, destroying national heritage, and sold the gold in graduation and wedding rings.

The fisherman was arrested after confessing, under the influence of alcohol, that he had found some jewels in the sea and spent several years in jail, while the jeweler avoided prison, explained Porfirio Castro, director of the San Juan de Ulúa fortress.

He stated that the government managed to recover some pieces, such as a pectoral, bracelets, and bangles with marcasite details, which are believed to have originated in Oaxaca. There are also eagle warrior earrings, a turtle, and pendants made from turtle shells. Additionally, there are casts of royal fifth coins, as well as other destroyed pieces.

He specified that the jewels will be exhibited starting in June at the San Juan de Ulúa fortress and the exhibition will be open to the public permanently.

In addition to the jewelry exhibition, they are also preparing a display to recognize Afro-descendants in memory of the people who were brought from Africa and who were building the fortress in a situation of slavery, and above all to recognize their legacy and contributions to the culture of Veracruz, its food, its music and more.
