The relentless wave of robberies and the lack of police presence on the streets have pushed Tijuana residents to their breaking point. On Thursday afternoon, blood was spilled at a business in the East Zone, where a violent robbery ended in tragedy for the criminals: the store owner, a victim of crime, found the strength to defend himself and shot his assailant with his own weapon.
The clock read 2:29 p.m. when terror entered through the door of “Abarrotes Karen” (Karen’s Grocery Store), located on La Misión private street in the Real de San Francisco 2 subdivision. Two armed men burst in with the clear intention of sowing panic and forcibly taking the day’s earnings.
To subdue their victim, one of the criminals attacked the owner and struck him brutally with the butt of his pistol, causing a deep wound to the skull and severe bleeding.
But the robbers hadn’t counted on the survival instinct of a citizen determined to defend what was his. Far from giving up despite the pain of his wound, the shopkeeper confronted his attacker. In a dramatic, life-or-death struggle for control of the weapon, the grocer managed to disarm the criminal and shot him point-blank.
The assailant fell dead on the floor of the very store he had tried to rob just minutes before. Seeing his accomplice lying in a pool of blood, the second thief showed his cowardice and fled on foot, disappearing into the streets before the police patrols could even sound their sirens.
When the Red Cross paramedics arrived at the bloody scene, there was nothing they could do for the assailant; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The courageous shopkeeper was treated for his severe head injury and rushed to a hospital. He is currently in the custody of the Municipal Police, awaiting the Prosecutor’s Office to determine his legal status and confirm that he acted in strict self-defense. The scene was cordoned off for the removal of the body by the coroner’s office.
Tijuana is overwhelmed by crime, and citizens are risking their lives to protect their property.
