Mexican photographers Cristina Kahlo, Marcos García, and Marco Girón are participating in an exhibition of 60 images about the carnival in the Tzeltal municipality of Tenejapa, currently on display at the Latino Museum of Omaha, Nebraska, USA.

This was reported by Marco Girón, a native of Tenejapa, who explained that the exhibition, titled “The Festival of the Sun,” as the carnival is known, opened on March 20 and will run until August of this year. It will also travel to other locations in the United States.

In a phone interview, he said, “The project arose in 2023, after a conversation Cristina, Marcos, and I had, in which we discussed visiting the town of Tenejapa, since I know the carnival, which they call the Festival of the Sun, very well.”

He added, “We each created a series of 20 photographs. That is, 60 images that allude to the largest festival in terms of rituals in Tenejapa, a Tzeltal municipality.”

Girón stated that the exhibition “features images of this ritual, made possible with the support of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, in collaboration with the Latino Museum of Omaha, Nebraska, USA, and also with the ongoing support of the Portales del Arte Civil Association in Chiapas, which provides a meeting point for Chiapas artists to showcase and share their art in different countries.”

He commented that the exhibition was also made possible “thanks to the invitation of Carlos Tortolero, President Emeritus of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, who supported us in presenting the 60 images in Nebraska, as well as the warm welcome extended to Magdalena A. García, Director of the Latino Museum there.”

He reported that only he and Marcos García attended the opening of the exhibition, as Cristina Kahlo “could not be with us because she is giving lectures in the United States.”

He said that Dolores Peyrot, Sergio Hernández and Juan Chawuk, members of the Civil Association Portales del Arte in Chiapas, also attended as companions.
