Bertha Gómez Fong, wife of former Chihuahua governor César Duarte, was arrested by ICE agents in El Paso, Texas, and remains in an immigration processing center.
In this regard, César Gutiérrez Priego, a criminal lawyer specializing in security and the armed forces, commented on Fórmula Noticias with Juan Becerra Acosta that Gómez Fong should appear quickly before Mexican authorities, not U.S. ones.
“I think they will try to exhaust all legal options available to her in the United States, but I do believe we will see how quickly she will appear before Mexican authorities because it is the obligation of the Mexican government that all those who have been able to remain free thanks to impunity come and be prosecuted,” he commented.
Gómez Fong was the president of the DIF (National System for Integral Family Development) in Chihuahua from 2010 to 2016. Despite not yet being formally charged with any crime, she is identified as part of the network her husband operated to embezzle 73 million pesos.
In fact, La Jornada reported in August 2020 that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) had issued an arrest warrant for her; however, she filed for an injunction to prevent her extradition to Mexico, but it was unsuccessful.
According to El País, the former governor’s wife was in Miami, Florida, at that time. It’s worth recalling that Duarte was arrested in December 2025 for his alleged involvement in money laundering.
In 2026, a judge granted Duarte a permanent injunction to indefinitely postpone the start of his trial; however, this does not mean the former PRI member is now free. His wife, Bertha Olga Fung, has now been arrested by ICE in Texas.
