Amid widespread concern over the recent oil spill in the Gulf, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has issued a message that brings relief to the fishing and tourism sectors of the state: Campeche’s beaches are free of contamination. This confirmation comes after a series of aerial and ground inspections aimed at tracking the spread of the oil toward the coast.
Miguel Ángel Miranda Mendoza, Pemex’s Deputy Director of Security and Environmental Protection, was tasked with addressing the crisis. After landing from the reconnaissance flights, his assessment was conclusive: there is no trace of crude oil touching the Campeche sand. He assures that the monitoring has not been accidental, but rather a continuous deployment to safeguard the state’s environmental heritage.
“Completely clean, we saw it just now during the overflights,” stated Miranda Mendoza, definitively quashing rumors about a possible massive influx of tar into local beaches. Beyond the current image of a blue sea, the state-owned company maintains that the strategy is to “focus heavily on prevention.”
The official emphasized that inter-institutional collaboration is key to ensuring an immediate response should the currents change course.
