Following the announcement of a further extension to the deadline for free license plate replacement in Jalisco, the Ministry of Public Finance reported that an appointment is no longer required to complete the process.

License plate replacement is mandatory for all vehicles with plates bearing the “Maguey,” “Minerva,” and “Gota” (red and green) designs, including motorcycles, trailers, public transportation, taxis, cars, and pickup trucks.

These designs do not comply with the technical requirements established by current federal regulations NOM-001-SCT-2-2016, administered by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).

Who can replace their license plates for free in Jalisco?

According to the Ministry of Public Finance, the extension applies to those who paid their 2025 registration fee in the same year and have an active and up-to-date vehicle registration in the Vehicle Registry. That is, those who do not need to update their information, such as change of ownership or other procedures that involve modifying the registration.

The extension will be for two more months, with a new deadline of Friday, May 29. This extension aims to facilitate compliance with the vehicle license plate replacement process in the state.

Requirements for free license plate replacement in Jalisco without an appointment: Since an appointment is not necessary, taxpayers only need to go directly to the state tax collection offices with the following documents:

Proof of payment of the 2025 vehicle registration fee made during the same year.
Set of license plates with a design prior to the so-called Collage or Cabañas design (Minerva, Gota, or Maguey).
Valid official identification (INE, driver’s license, or passport), original and copy.
Document proving vehicle ownership (tax receipt, title, court order, or deed of adjudication), original and copy.
Proof of address issued no more than 90 days prior, original and copy. Proof of Approval or Not Approval.

The new deadline aims to prevent overcrowding at tax collection offices, allowing for better distribution of service during this holiday period.

To complete the process in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, you can visit during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, tax collection offices located in municipalities in the interior of the state are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Once this extension has ended, the process will cost approximately 4,000 pesos, which includes the license plate fee (around 2,500 pesos) and the modifications to the State Vehicle Registry.

People driving with outdated license plates will be subject to penalties from the Jalisco Traffic Police, in accordance with current regulations.
