Professionals in Durango are highly qualified, but many are not practicing: FECOP

Higher education institutions in the state of Durango produce very high-quality professionals; however, many of them, due to not completing their professional development, end up working in fields unrelated to their training, and others seek to leave the state, explained José Alberto Pérez de la Cruz, president of the Federation of Professional Associations (FECOP).

I am definitely committed to ensuring that professionals not only graduate and seek employment in the workforce, but also become entrepreneurs and create their own job opportunities. Professional associations are currently working to provide training so that their members can become entrepreneurs and find employment not only within the state, but throughout the country. José Alberto Pérez

Pérez de la Cruz emphasized that the quality of Durango’s professionals is among the best; however, as he had previously stated, many of them do not complete the necessary paperwork, such as obtaining their professional license.

It’s important to remember that at least seven out of ten professionals lack a professional license because the process is cumbersome and expensive. Consequently, many end up working in the informal sector or, as mentioned earlier, in fields unrelated to their academic training.

He pointed out that the Federation of Professional Associations (FECOP) has designed at least eight certifications for different areas. However, some professionals, through their associations (some of which are federated), commonly obtain other national certifications. Nevertheless, efforts are underway to establish Durango as a certifying body.

Among the professionals showing the greatest progress in certifications are those in the health and construction sectors; we could say they are leading the way. But there are also certifications in architecture, civil engineering, social work, and agronomy, among others.

Finally, Pérez affirmed that the Federation is working in different areas and that, ultimately, advancing certifications and ensuring that more professionals obtain their professional licenses are two priority challenges for 2026.
