A foreign tourist reported being the victim of alleged kidnapping, extortion, and threats by a taxi driver in Playa del Carmen, in a new case that has once again raised concerns about abuses in transportation in this tourist destination.

The victim managed to capture the moment he was allegedly intimidated on video, footage that quickly began circulating and generating outrage.

In the video, the tourist can be heard arguing with the driver after the latter demanded a higher fare than agreed upon. The visitor explained that he only owed 100 pesos, but the taxi driver allegedly tried to force him to pay a larger amount, claiming he didn’t have change for a larger bill.

“I only have to pay what’s fair. It’s not my responsibility if he doesn’t have change,” the tourist can be heard saying in the recording.

The situation escalated to such a point that the tourist claimed to have been threatened and even briefly detained, which he described as an attempted extortion.

This case adds to a growing wave of complaints about abuse, threats and alleged extortion by taxi drivers, both against tourists and against drivers of digital platforms.
