A young Indigenous woman who killed her husband in self-defense will be released in the coming hours, the Attorney General of the State of Chiapas, Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, confirmed on Monday.
Petrona ‘N’, a woman from the Tseltal Indigenous community, mother of five and pregnant, killed Alonso ‘N’ with a knife last Saturday, April 4, in the community of Yashanal, municipality of Tenejapa, in the Highlands region of Chiapas, an hour and a half from San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
Llaven Abarca, head of the Attorney General’s Office, said that he instructed that the investigation be conducted with a gender perspective after the discovery of the body of Alonso ‘N’.
And that, after the investigations were carried out, “the prosecution determined that the defendant, Petrona ‘N’, acted in self-defense.”
It was explained that after analyzing the context and according to the medical reports, “the defendant presented physical injuries and psychological problems due to living in a situation of violence.”
Therefore, the prosecution undertook the task of analyzing all the evidence from a gender perspective, establishing that the defendant was being attacked and was in real and imminent danger of losing her life.
Llaven Abarca also stated that it was proven that the defendant’s reaction was proportional to the aggression she was suffering; furthermore, there was no prior provocation on the part of the defendant towards her aggressor.
It should be noted that an inter-institutional and multidisciplinary team will accompany her and provide her with medical and psychological support.
Llaven Abarca mentioned that in this case, the State Attorney General’s Office is setting an important precedent in the administration of justice by carrying out An investigation with a gender perspective.
Unofficially, it was reported that the young woman will no longer be able to return to the community where she lived, as she could face reprisals from the deceased’s family or from traditional authorities.
Therefore, she will receive full support from the state to rebuild her life with her family and children outside of that municipality.
