Merchants in Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa, and the municipal seat of Petatlán warned of the circulation of allegedly counterfeit 200 and 500 peso bills during Holy Week.

On Friday, April 3, in Zihuatanejo, merchants in the city center warned via social media that two women had made payments with counterfeit 200 and 500 peso bills. They shared the women’s photos to warn other businesses against being scammed.

Meanwhile, in Ixtapa, merchants in the commercial area reported a similar incident at a pharmacy, where someone purchased medications and other items using counterfeit bills.

Separately, on Friday, April 3, the Petatlán City Council issued an official statement warning both merchants in the municipal seat and participants at the expo fair to exercise extreme caution when handling cash due to the possible circulation of counterfeit 200 and 500 peso bills within the fairgrounds.

In the statement, the municipal government indicated that any irregularities should be reported immediately to the authorities and the police officers guarding the fair.
