A selection of the treasures found in the project “100 Jewels of Sacred Art from the Yucatán Peninsula” can be seen in the exhibition dedicated to this work, installed inside the Mérida Cathedral. The exhibition features images and information that allow visitors to learn more about this unique cultural initiative.

The exhibition, which opened on Tuesday, July 7, is located at the main entrance of the state’s largest Catholic church.

Those entering the Cathedral can find 14 panels on the right, showcasing this remarkable project. The exhibition combines fascinating facts, previously unseen photographs, and audio and video material, featuring a selection of 100 jewels of sacred art, as the project’s title indicates.

The exhibition in the Cathedral… Mérida Cathedral offers a summary of the different categories included in the book, which is part of this valuable work. These categories are: Architecture, Liturgical Objects, Sculptures, Treasures of Quintana Roo, Paintings, and Gems of Campeche.

Each of these categories is represented in the exhibition with one of the 100 selected treasures. These can be explored through the images displayed, which are accompanied by texts explaining the significance of each historical, religious, and cultural treasure.

For example, in the Architecture section, the Convent of San Antonio de Padua in Izamal is showcased with an image that highlights the splendor of the building, and a text detailing that it boasts the second largest atrium in the world after St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

Among the sculptures on display is the image of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, which has been crowned twice: first in 1949 as Queen and Patroness of Yucatán by Archbishop Fernando Ruiz Solórzano, and then again in 1993 as Queen and Patroness of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas by Pope John Paul II.

In the paintings and artworks section, there is a little-known image of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Souls in Purgatory from Kanxoc, dating from the 17th century. In the liturgical objects section, the chalice from the Mérida Cathedral, dating from 1905, is made of gold and was specially crafted by the Poussielgue workshop in Paris. The accompanying information details, among other things, that it cost 100,000 pesos, a fortune at the time.

Treasures of Quintana Roo offers a glimpse of the open-air chapel of Oxtankah, notable for being one of the first Spanish constructions on the entire Yucatán Peninsula, built in the 1530s, when the Conquest was just beginning.

And speaking of the Gems of Campeche, the exhibition features the Holy Sepulchre, a sculpture of the recumbent Christ that displays each mark of the Passion with breathtaking realism.

The exhibition also explores the triquetra, an ancient Christian symbol representing the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three distinct persons in one divinity, thus highlighting the wide array of jewels included in the project.

Those who visit the Mérida Cathedral are drawn to this exhibition and pause to contemplate the images and explanatory texts, many of which surprise them, as they were unaware that the peninsula, for example, boasts the second largest open-air atrium in the world.

The book “100 Jewels of Sacred Art from the Yucatan Peninsula” – the core of the multiplatform project – is available in a limited hardcover edition with enriched content, a standard softcover edition, and a hardcover edition in English.
