Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, governor of Michoacán, revealed this Thursday, April 9, that all indications point to former state governor Silvano Aureoles Conejo hiding in the United States.
Ramírez Bedolla explained at a press conference that he has already requested the intervention of the Attorney General of the Republic, Ernestina Godoy Ramos, to issue an international arrest warrant (red notice).
Alfredo Ramírez recalled that Silvano Aureoles is a fugitive from justice after being formally charged with alleged embezzlement of approximately 3.4 billion pesos.
He added that a state judge has also issued a warrant for his extradition because he is accused of torture, homicide, and abuse of authority in connection with an armed confrontation that occurred during his administration in the community of Arantepacua, where four community members were killed.
The governor of Michoacán insisted that both federal and state authorities continue searching for Silvano Aureoles to bring him to justice.
The Attorney General of Michoacán, Carlos Torres Piña, asserted that Silvano Aureoles was able to flee with the support of members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Torres Piña believes that this criminal organization first helped him escape from Michoacán and then transported him to northern Mexico, and very likely out of the country altogether.
For this reason, Governor Alfredo Ramírez emphasized that the former governor of Michoacán should have faced justice since last year. Aureoles Conejo has denied all the accusations and reiterated that the investigations are part of a “political persecution.”
Silvano Aureoles has arrest warrants issued against him for the alleged misuse of funds in the construction of security barracks and for the 2017 massacre in Arantepacua.
A native of Carácuaro, Aureoles is an agricultural engineer whose career took him from mayor to governor between 2015 and 2021. His administration was marked by mounting questions regarding his handling of security, episodes of public confrontation, and government decisions that generated criticism.
In the final stretch of his term, violence in regions like Tierra Caliente placed Michoacán in the national spotlight, while events such as the deployment of security forces in Aguililla unfolded.
