The Undersecretary of Tourism for Baja California Sur, Fernando Ojeda Aguilar, reported that the state is solidifying its position as a tourism powerhouse, having welcomed 58,000 young people during Spring Break. This influx of visitors reaffirms the state’s status as the third most popular destination for international tourists in Mexico, surpassed only by Quintana Roo and Mexico City, maintaining a strong competitive edge against other global destinations.
The current season has revealed significant changes in the visitor profile. According to Ojeda Aguilar, a trend has emerged of tourists with greater purchasing power within the youth segment, who are opting for high-end services. Furthermore, a growing phenomenon is the number of young people traveling with their families, which diversifies the economic impact in major tourist centers like Los Cabos.
Regarding price competitiveness, the Undersecretary emphasized that Los Cabos remains one of the most expensive sun and beach destinations in the country. Despite the implementation of taxes such as the environmental sanitation tax, the arrival of travelers has not been affected, demonstrating that the international market values exclusivity and quality of service over cost.
“There are Spring Breakers who can afford higher-end hotels than the standard packages, and another interesting phenomenon is that many of these young people travel with their families.”
“Baja California Sur continues to generate even more economic activity… the number of arrivals is not as significant as how much they spend, and that’s where we remain competitive nationally.”
Regarding security, the undersecretary emphasized that the recently reported incidents are considered isolated events that do not define the state’s overall situation. The international perception of Baja California Sur remains extremely positive, reflected in one of the highest tourist return rates in all of Mexico, thanks to security operations and local hospitality.
The analysis by state authorities indicates that the destination has successfully protected its institutional image. Fernando Ojeda Aguilar highlighted that, according to surveys conducted at airports, tourists who have already visited the destination rate the region with levels of excellence, positioning Los Cabos and La Paz as benchmarks of tranquility and order for foreign travelers.
