Baja California Sur (BCS) is consolidating its tourism growth with the projected addition of more than 1,200 new hotel rooms in the coming years, primarily in the municipality of Los Cabos, Fernando Ojeda Aguilar, Undersecretary of Tourism for the Ministry of Tourism and Economy (SETUE), told Diario El Independiente in an interview.
The official explained that between 2025 and 2027, the addition of approximately 1,230 rooms is planned, resulting from various investments in hotel development, reflecting the sector’s confidence in the destination.
He explained that while Los Cabos is concentrating on larger-scale projects, La Paz is showing a different trend, with more modest but consistent investments focused on smaller boutique hotels with capacities ranging from 10 to 30 rooms.
Ojeda Aguilar emphasized that the economic impact of tourism extends beyond the direct creation of jobs in hotels, as it involves an entire supply and service chain.
In that regard, he pointed out that both large resorts and boutique hotels contribute to economic development, albeit with different dynamics.
He also highlighted that new investments are aligned with international environmental trends, prioritizing sustainable practices such as reducing single-use plastics and implementing technologies that optimize water and resource consumption.
Regarding security, the undersecretary emphasized that this factor has been crucial for tourism growth in the state. He recalled that, although a security crisis was faced in 2017, Baja California Sur currently maintains favorable indicators, which strengthens the destination’s image.
“Security conditions are now one of the main factors in attracting investment and influencing tourists’ travel choices. Baja California Sur has one of the best security perceptions in the country, and that has been key to maintaining the sector’s growth,” he stated.
Finally, he noted that this environment has allowed the state to continue positioning itself as one of the most competitive tourist destinations in Mexico, without facing recent crises in the sector.
