The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, clarified that no resources were misused, after explaining his son Marcelo Patrick Ebrard Ramos’s stay at the Mexican Embassy in the United Kingdom.
“I don’t see any abuse on my part in this, other than a father’s concern for his son. We didn’t misuse any resources,” the official stated during Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference.
The Secretary informed the then-Mexican Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Josefa González-Blanco Ortiz-Mena, that his son would be in the UK for academic reasons in 2021, when he was serving as Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE) during Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration and was focused on bringing COVID-19 vaccines to Mexico, he noted.
“Josefa told me, ‘Send him to the residence, and I’ll treat him like a son for as long as necessary,’” Ebrard recounted.
He also mentioned that his son was only in the United Kingdom for about six months, where he took the opportunity to organize an exhibition about the Mexican community’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. He studied Psychology and Medicine and is now interested in neuroscience.
He explained that Marcelo Patrick wanted to stay longer but decided to return to Mexico because classes were online due to the pandemic.
“As far as I know, his conduct was and always has been impeccable,” Ebrard asserted, after journalist Claudio Ochoa revealed the former foreign minister’s son’s stay at the embassy. Ochoa pointed out that he occupied one of the best rooms in the building, with cleaning, laundry, and ironing services, as well as a personal cook. The student allegedly had a conflict with the cook, leading his mother to request her dismissal, which the ambassador refused. request.
Regarding this, Marcelo Ebrard commented: “I see a lot of pettiness in those kinds of articles […] My son only wanted to contribute, through that exposure, to making our community better off in London.”
Finally, the former foreign minister added: “If there’s anything I can be criticized for, it’s that as a father I was concerned about my son’s health while he was in a foreign country and that I accepted Josefa, whom I am very grateful to this day, for treating him like a son and housing him as if he were family.”
