Between 2010 and 2022, 166 homicides of foreign nationals were recorded in the State of Mexico, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
The most recent data available, consulted by MILENIO, corresponds to 2022, a year in which eight such cases were recorded.
The highest peak occurred in 2019, with 21 homicides, which is equivalent to practically one every two weeks.
Nationally, 481 homicides of foreign nationals were recorded that same year, meaning the State of Mexico accounted for 4.3% of the total.
Despite this, the State of Mexico ranked sixth nationally. Chiapas topped the list with 63 cases, followed by Chihuahua (58), Tamaulipas (35), Guanajuato (27), Sonora (25), and finally, the State of Mexico with 21.
Although INEGI has records dating back to 1990, this analysis focuses on the period from 2010 to 2022, the most recent with disaggregated data.
In 2010, five homicides of foreigners were reported, and in 2011 the number doubled to 10. Eleven cases were recorded in each of 2012 and 2013.
In 2014, there was an increase to 14 homicides, while in 2015 the number dropped to nine.
