President Claudia Sheinbaum led the inspection of the Maya Train rail connection works in this municipality with the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT).

Beside the tracks, President Sheinbaum Pardo received a general report from Gustavo Vallejo Suárez, the engineer in charge of the Maya Train’s freight infrastructure construction. Vallejo explained the details of the Palenque rail freight complex.

“It includes the construction of five large rail freight complexes: Progreso, Pochilaque (which is proper), Mérida, Cancún, and Palenque. In this first stage, along with a rail system to activate the industry located in Mérida, connecting it to the freight rail line and allowing for the import and export of supplies,” he commented.

She said a rail line to Progreso will also be available.

“And in a second phase, one of these complexes in Chetumal will be built, along with four operations yards, which are essentially smaller freight facilities. Currently, we are 43 percent complete with the infrastructure. It is scheduled to be finished in two years, but we will complete this first phase by December 31st. The purpose? To provide the Maya Train with freight infrastructure for the early start of operations,” she added.

She clarified that 14,000 jobs have been created across eight construction sites. She explained that this facility will receive, classify, and dispatch goods, as well as facilitate the transfer of freight train hauling responsibilities among various concessionaires. Afterward, Mayor Sheinbaum Pardo toured the construction site.
