US President Donald Trump joked about his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, on Friday, imitating her voice as he reaffirmed his stance on the use of the name “Gulf of Mexico,” an issue that has generated political and diplomatic debate between the two countries.

“She (Sheinbaum) is a beautiful woman, she has a beautiful voice… she was a ballet dancer,” Trump said during a private dinner at the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches, held Friday in Florida.

“With her beautiful voice, she said to me, ‘President, President, tell me you’re not going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.’ Oh yes, I am going to,’ I replied.”

Trump said “President, President” in a poor translation he attempted from Spanish.

The dinner guests, including business leaders, officials, and select invitees, laughed at the Republican’s comment.

Trump decided to reignite the controversy over the name of the Gulf of Mexico, which he revived in January 2025, when the US president publicly raised the possibility of referring to the area as the “Gulf of America” in official US documents and communications.

The proposal drew immediate rejection from the Mexican government, led by Sheinbaum, which defended the historical name of the gulf and warned that it would not accept unilateral changes to its name in international forums or on official maps.
