Hundreds of regional and national visitors have thronged the streets, walkways, central park, and museums of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, in the Chiapas Highlands region, during this long weekend. For five days, tourists have also flocked to parks, resorts, churches, and other recreational areas to spend time with family and friends, take photos, and continue their journeys to other tourist destinations.

In May 2016, the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) authorized a five-day weekend, from Friday, May 1st to Tuesday, May 5th (Labor Day and the Battle of Puebla), so visitors took advantage of the opportunity to explore the colonial city, enjoy the 25-degree Celsius weather during the day, and cool nights that can reach as low as 13 degrees Celsius. It is expected that they will begin to leave the Jovel Valley tomorrow, Tuesday.

Although the extended weekend ends this Tuesday, the influx of tourists continues. Today, visitors can still be seen strolling through the streets of San Cristóbal, enjoying the atmosphere, art, and culture that characterize this colonial city, founded in 1528.

According to recent images, hundreds of regional and national tourists can be seen exploring the city and admiring its climate, traditional architecture, tile roofs, churches, cobblestone streets, and local cuisine. Some visitors noted that the holiday weekend is “unfortunately about to end.”

“We arrived a couple of days ago; the long weekend is almost over, but there are still a lot of people. We came from other tourist destinations in Chiapas and stopped in San Cristóbal because we like the climate, the people, the colonial houses, the museums, the pedestrian walkways, and the churches. We’re here with our family enjoying this weather and the warmth of its people. Tomorrow we’re heading back to our place in Tabasco,” said one of the visitors.

Meanwhile, local restaurants continue to offer a wide variety of regional cuisine in the San Cristóbal de Las Casas style, which is well-received by tourists. They also frequent the sweets and handicrafts market, where they can sample traditional artisanal products such as sweet potato, orange preserves, nuégados (a type of nougat), and coconut.

San Cristóbal de Las Casas is expected to return to its normal pace in the coming days, after welcoming hundreds of tourists during this holiday period. It is worth noting that the colonial city recently celebrated its 498th anniversary on March 31st.
