Sheinbaum asks that Mexico not be used in US elections

“Just as they don’t want Mexican interference in the United States elections, we also don’t want Mexico used for the United States election,” stated President Claudia Sheinbaum in defense of the case of the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, who is on leave and accused by the United States government of ties to drug trafficking.

She reiterated: “Likewise, we ask that the elections in Mexico be held without interference from any country.” And she affirmed: “If it’s a judicial matter, the law should be followed; if it’s a political matter, that’s another thing, and in that case, we don’t want interference.”

The Mexican president ruled out discussing the Rocha Moya case and the other nine people related to this request for provisional arrest in her next conversation with her counterpart, Donald Trump.

“That’s what a Secretary of Foreign Affairs is for, speaking with the ambassador or with U.S. authorities. That’s what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) is for. I hope that… there’s a proper channel because it involves an office of the U.S. Department of Justice, which is being asked for evidence.”

The Mexican president also criticized the visit to Mexico of the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, although she immediately addressed the issue of freedom of expression.

“We say the same to the president of the Spanish community. She comes here to ask for investments and some other things, which is fine, but if her interest is political… she has the right to come and speak. We’re not going to restrict her freedom of expression. However, I don’t think it benefits whoever brought her here because we’re not going to help her talk about Hernán Cortés and the conquest to win an election in our country.”

At the same time, “we always ask for respect, just as they ask for respect.”

President Sheinbaum insisted on returning to the topic of Rocha Moya to emphasize:

“That is our position, and it will always be our position, with dignity, with the dignity of the Mexican people. With that same dignity, the people’s representative, the president, presents herself before all the nations of the world, always asking for respect, but always seeking a good relationship and the resolution of any problem, not confrontation. It is a legal matter; let them present the evidence.”
