Mexico is the country with the highest homicidal violence against journalists in Latin America.

Mexico remains the Latin American country with the highest number of murders of press workers in 2025. According to figures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the country recorded 11 homicides of journalists and media workers, far exceeding the rest of the region.

After Mexico come Ecuador and Peru, both with four registered murders, followed by Brazil with three and Honduras with two. Colombia, Venezuela, and Guatemala each reported one case.

The difference between Mexico and the rest of the Latin American countries highlights the persistence of high levels of violence against journalists, particularly in contexts linked to organized crime, corruption, security coverage, and political or territorial conflicts.

National and international organizations have repeatedly pointed out that practicing journalism in Mexico continues to represent a high risk, especially in states where criminal groups operate or where impunity prevails.

Violence against the press not only impacts the direct victims and their families but also affects access to information and freedom of expression. Several international organizations consider the protection of journalists a key element for democratic functioning and accountability.

Although several countries in the region face similar threats, the figures show that Mexico continues to have the highest incidence of murders of media workers in Latin America.
