The Chinese company GAC announced it will open its first car manufacturing plant in Mexico, becoming the first 100% Chinese automaker to produce vehicles in the country.
The company is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2026 and plans to produce SUVs, pickups, sedans, and electric cars for the Mexican market, also seeking to circumvent the high tariffs imposed on imported Chinese vehicles.
Although the official location of the plant has not yet been revealed, reports point to automotive facilities in Morelos or Aguascalientes. This move reflects how Mexico is becoming a key territory in the trade war between China and the United States.
While the Chinese company JAC Motors has been operating in Mexico since 2017, it does so through Giant Motors Latinoamérica, a 100% Mexican company associated with Carlos Slim. It is not a 100% Chinese operation; it is an alliance/localization with a Mexican partner. In that context, GAC presents itself as the first brand with 100% Chinese control in Mexico.
