They are considering renting Turkish ships to guarantee energy in Quintana Roo

Faced with growing energy demand and as a temporary measure while federal projects are being consolidated, the State Government is considering leasing power-generating vessels.

Artemio Santos Santos, Coordinator of Public Policy for the Cabinet and Emblematic Projects, revealed that they are evaluating the possibility of contracting units from a Turkish company with the capacity to generate between 50 and 250 Megawatts (MW).

This would allow them to supply electricity to between 250,000 and 1.5 million families in Quintana Roo.

These vessels operate using combined-cycle power plants that run on natural gas and have the advantage of connecting directly to the supply grid.

However, their implementation faces logistical challenges, as they require specialized port infrastructure due to their draft.

In this regard, the state official indicated that they are studying the possibility of using the Port of Calica for this purpose.

“They wouldn’t remain permanently, but rather until the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) finalizes its supply projects for the Yucatán Peninsula,” Santos Santos clarified.

This generation model is already used in other Caribbean regions such as Cuba—where eight units operate—Guyana, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.

In Mexico, the most recent precedent occurred in August 2025, when the Karadeniz Powership Süheyla Sultan demonstrated its 240 MW capacity in the port of Seybaplaya, Campeche, before CFE officials.

On the other hand, addressing the electricity crisis also depends on onshore infrastructure.

Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña reported that the city council has already handed over two properties to the CFE for the construction of emergency substations: one located in the Cielo Nuevo area and the other on Huayacán Avenue.

Although the municipal government has released the necessary land, the mayor indicated that they are still waiting for the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to set a start date for the construction, which was originally scheduled for February.

These actions aim to strengthen the local grid in critical areas of urban growth while awaiting the completion of strategic projects under the National Electric System Development Program.

These projects include additional substations and a combined-cycle power plant for the peninsula region.
