International fishing tournament closes with record participation in Zihuatanejo

The 41st edition of the International Sailfish Fishing Tournament concluded this Sunday in Zihuatanejo with a record-breaking 260 boats participating and an attendance exceeding 2,000 people per day, solidifying its position as one of Mexico’s most important sport fishing events and the largest in the country for this discipline.

After three days of intense activity at the main pier and in the bay’s waters, local anglers, national visitors, and international competitors participated in a tournament that, in addition to promoting sport fishing, boosted hotel occupancy, commercial activity, and tourism in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.

The awards ceremony brought together municipal authorities, organizers, cooperative members, and participating families, officially closing an event that generated significant economic benefits for hotels, restaurants, marinas, transportation companies, and businesses linked to the tourism sector.

Tournament Growth Acknowledged This Year

Armando José Torres, president of the Teniente José Azueta fishing cooperative, expressed his gratitude for the participation of the fishermen and sponsors, and acknowledged the support provided by municipal authorities for the tournament’s development.

He emphasized that the event’s sustained growth confirms the importance of sport fishing for Zihuatanejo’s economy and tourism development, especially given the number of participants from different regions of Mexico and abroad.

For her part, Mayor Lizette Tapia Castro noted that this year’s tournament further solidified its position on the national stage, strengthening the destination’s image as one of the premier sport fishing spots on the Mexican Pacific coast.

During her remarks, she also announced that the pier area will undergo modifications and improvements to provide a more comfortable, functional, and organized space for future tournaments and marine-related tourism activities.

These were the winners of this year’s tournament:

In the Dorado category, the winning vessel was La Salada, with a catch of 22.75 kilograms.

In the Marlin category, the first place went to the vessel Gloria a Jesús, with a 163.050-kilogram specimen.

Meanwhile, in the main Sailfish category, which gives the tournament its name, the vessel Micki took first place with a catch of 39.600 kilograms.

The competition awarded millions in prizes and fostered a family-friendly atmosphere, boosted tourism, and generated significant economic activity throughout the weekend.

Closing with music and a festive ambiance

Following the official awards ceremony, the activities concluded with a musical celebration headlined by the group La Súper Máquina Musical, bringing to a close an edition that once again filled the pier and the port’s streets with a vibrant atmosphere.

With this result, the International Sailfish Fishing Tournament reaffirms its position as one of Zihuatanejo’s flagship events and a key platform for maintaining the destination’s strong national and international tourism profile.
