The high temperatures affecting southeastern Mexico have begun to cause a series of power outages in states such as Veracruz, Tabasco, and Yucatán, where thousands of families are facing electricity cuts amid heat indices exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
In municipalities and neighborhoods across these states, residents have reported constant power failures, damage to appliances, food spoilage, and entire nights without fans or air conditioning during one of the hottest times of the year.
Veracruz reports power outages in several municipalities
In Veracruz, power outages have increased due to overloading of high-voltage lines, primarily at night when energy consumption in homes rises.
This past weekend, neighborhoods in Coatzacoalcos, such as Santa Marta, San Martín, Esfuerzos de los Hermanos del Trabajo, and Ciudad Olmeca, were without electricity for several hours during the early morning.
Other municipalities that also reported outages include Las Choapas, Cosoleacaque, and Jáltipan. Municipal authorities even reported holding meetings with personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to inspect high-voltage power lines and address the problems.
Concern among residents is growing because the National Water Commission (Conagua) has warned of heat indices near 50 degrees Celsius in some regions of the state.
Tabasco experiences protests over constant power outages
In Tabasco, the blackouts have also sparked protests and road blockades in various parts of Villahermosa and other municipalities.
According to official reports, more than 15 blockades have been registered in the last two weeks due to power outages, many of them related to transformer explosions and overloaded power lines caused by the extreme heat.
One of the most recent cases occurred in the Casa Blanca neighborhood of Villahermosa, where residents blocked the ring road to demand the restoration of electricity.
In addition, residents of the Buenavista ranchería reported a power outage that lasted for more than 12 hours.
The Tabasco Civil Protection Institute reported that temperatures could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, while municipal authorities acknowledged that some pumping systems and water treatment plants have temporarily suspended operations due to the power failures.
Yucatán
In Yucatán, the situation has generated social discontent. Residents of Kanasín reported at least two power outages in less than 48 hours, while in Mérida, residents of the Vista Alegre Norte neighborhood blocked República de Corea Avenue to demand the restoration of service after being without electricity for several hours.
Furthermore, other areas such as Sodzil Norte, Jesús Carranza, and Polígono 108 also experienced prolonged power outages during the heat wave.
Experts point out that the intensive use of fans and air conditioning systems during high temperatures overloads the electrical grid and saturates transformers, highlighting infrastructure problems in various regions of the country.
Growing concern over the electrical grid
The combination of extreme temperatures and high energy demand has thousands of families in southeastern Mexico on alert, where concern is growing about the possibility of continued power outages in the coming weeks.
As the heat continues to intensify, residents of Veracruz, Tabasco, and Yucatán are demanding immediate solutions to prevent further damage to homes, businesses, and basic services.
