Campeche remains among the Mexican states with the greatest economic declines, registering the steepest drop recorded between 2022 and 2026, according to the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity by State published by INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography).
The national president of Canacintra (National Chamber of the Transformation Industry), María de Lourdes Medina Ortega, emphasized that it is crucial for state authorities, at both the state and municipal levels, to urgently address the issue of informal employment. The business leader pointed out that only through formalization can greater revenue be generated through tax collection to support public development policies.
“I believe it is fundamental that we formalize employment and that everyone participates by paying taxes, which is ultimately the only way we have to create equitable economic development,” Medina Ortega stressed. She even noted that the state’s average rate of informality is practically identical to the national average, remaining at 56 percent.
According to the report on industrial activity variation by state, Campeche registered a severe 6.1 percent drop between December 2025 and January 2026, going from a negative balance of -4 percent to a worrying -10.1 percent.
With these figures, the state ranked as the second entity with the highest negative variation nationwide, surpassed only by Oaxaca, which topped the list with the most pronounced contraction, registering an average of -13.6 percent.
