According to the weekly report from the Federal Ministry of Health (SSa), diagnoses of stomach illnesses or infections in the state of Campeche increased by more than a thousand cases compared to the total recorded during 2025, rising from 23,034 to 24,061 as of May 2nd.
These illnesses are classified into nine main categories, some of which showed an increase while others decreased compared to the cumulative total for the same period of the previous year. Intestinal infections caused by other organisms and poorly defined infections stand out, increasing from 10,719 cases in 2025 to 11,381 in 2026.
Similarly, intestinal infectious diseases increased by 526 cases, reaching a total of 11,949 diagnoses. Other infections that showed an increase were Enterobiasis (from 53 to 84 cases) and Ascariasis (from 23 to 25 cases).
Meanwhile, other infections decreased up to epidemiological week 17, such as Helminthiasis (from 235 to 144), Giardiasis (from 46 to 37), and Intestinal Infections Due to Protozoa (from 187 to 122).
Regarding Intestinal Amebiasis, there were 29 fewer cases (from 330 to 301), while Bacterial Food Poisoning decreased from 18 to 10 cases in four months.
All these illnesses account for a total of 24,061 cases detected in 2026, 1,027 more than the 23,034 cases recorded in 2025, marking an overall increase of 4.46%.
Among the common symptoms, these illnesses cause diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting, among others. Gastrointestinal illnesses tend to increase during hot weather, when people consume more fast food, street drinks, or foods of questionable quality exposed to contaminating bacteria.
