A large military and police operation was launched Wednesday in the southern region of Zacatecas, an area bordering the states of Jalisco and Aguascalientes, following a series of intentional roadblocks set up by suspected members of criminal organizations.
The criminals set fire to several vehicles and a tractor-trailer, which were then used to block the highway.
The criminals blocked several highways in the municipality of Jalpa, obstructing traffic both to the municipality of Calvillo in Aguascalientes and to Huanusco, a Zacatecas municipality whose geography connects to the states of Aguascalientes and Jalisco.
Following the report, authorities launched a major security operation to search for those responsible, but no arrests have been reported so far.
Specialized personnel trained in this type of incident began cleanup efforts to clear the roads. Meanwhile, dozens of pedestrians were stranded in the area.
Public safety authorities urged the public to avoid non-essential travel on Federal Highway 54 and the sections surrounding the Juchipila Canyon, recommending the use of alternate routes.
The state government announced the activation of the anti-blockade operation, and federal and state forces were deployed in that part of Zacatecas.
The southern region of Zacatecas, particularly the municipalities bordering Jalisco and Aguascalientes, is a constant scene of territorial disputes between criminal groups operating in the border area. Residents have reported the frequent presence of convoys of armed men circulating in this region.
