In Cancún’s Hotel Zone, in the state of Quintana Roo, the collapse of a structure at the Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula left one person working on the premises injured; the individual was subsequently transported to a private hospital.
In a press release, Grupo RIU announced that the injured party is an employee of an external contracting firm who was performing their duties when the terrible accident occurred.
“Regarding the regrettable incident that took place on the premises of the Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula, we wish to inform you that an employee of an external contracting firm suffered an accident while performing their duties,” the statement begins.
“From the very first moment, we immediately activated our emergency and safety protocols, transporting the affected individual to a hospital to receive the necessary medical assistance. At this moment, our absolute priority is the health and well-being of the worker. Furthermore, we wish to express our most sincere regret regarding this distressing event; the safety of all individuals across all our properties is, and will remain, our highest priority.”
“We also wish to share that, from the outset, we have been collaborating closely and with full transparency with the relevant authorities to facilitate the corresponding investigations and to clarify the causes of what transpired,” concludes Grupo RIU’s statement.
However, unofficial accounts and testimonies from other workers suggest that more than just one person sustained injuries as a result of this incident; there are reports of two masons who were allegedly victims of this event, though authorities have not confirmed any fatalities to date.
Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, Municipal President of Benito Juárez, announced that the Hotel Riu Palace Peninsula—located at Kilometer 6 of Boulevard Kukulcán—has been temporarily closed following the severe accident. “The construction area has also been shut down for safety reasons, and the Attorney General’s Office has been notified to initiate an investigation and determine legal liability,” she declared.
Furthermore, the Municipal President stated that authorities learned of the disaster in Cancún’s Hotel Zone through media coverage, rather than through a formal report submitted by the company responsible for the construction work. “I would like to thank the media, for it was thanks to them that we received the actual report; no formal report had yet been filed, and the matter was addressed immediately.”
Personnel from the Directorate of Civil Protection and Fire Services, as well as from the Secretariat of Citizen Security and ministerial authorities, arrived at the scene. At this time, investigations remain ongoing, and officials are awaiting the formal expert reports to clarify the events that recently took place in Cancún, Quintana Roo.
