Nuevo León has a new Law for Sustainable Tourism Development and Promotion, which aims to boost the state’s economy, support municipalities, and regulate short-term rentals like Airbnb to provide better user protection.

Less than a month before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the state is launching the law, which primarily includes rules for regulating lodging platforms in the state through a registration of short-term stays.

The head of the State Tourism Secretariat, Maricarmen Martínez Villarreal, led an event at the Government Palace along with other legislative authorities and members of civil society to celebrate the publication of Decree 206 in the State Official Gazette.

“It’s not just a new law; Nuevo León is redefining how it understands, organizes, and projects tourism into the future. Today, tourism requires planning, coordination, and an institutional vision capable of uniting efforts and charting a course for the sector,” she said.

The enactment includes provisions to support local gastronomy, as well as the creation of municipal committees so that each municipality has the authority to promote and develop local economic strategies and Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) designations.

Furthermore, the project mandates sustainability, accessibility, and inclusion measures in new tourism-focused projects and activities.

To prevent child trafficking, strict security protocols were established for the protection of children and adolescents in temporary lodging establishments, with the aim of combating exploitation.

The law seeks to regulate and modernize the tourism growth that Nuevo León is experiencing, and as part of this evolution, the World Cup will serve as a trial run for the state to determine the effectiveness of the new regulations.

Villarreal Martínez estimates that between 350,000 and 400,000 domestic and international tourists will visit the state for the World Cup.
