Veracruz’s Historic Center Does Not Live Up to Its History: Cometur

“Any investment made to rehabilitate the Historic Center of the city of Veracruz is a positive step,” stated Sergio Lois Heredia, President of the Metropolitan Tourism Council (Cometur), in an interview.

The businessman welcomed the fact that the investment is not solely municipal, but also enjoys support from the State Government. While the initial phase will focus on rehabilitating the facades of various buildings, he emphasized the urgent need for further actions to ensure that Veracruz’s Historic Center lives up to the stature of its history.

“I haven’t paid close attention, so I am unaware of the specific details regarding the comprehensive restoration plan. I assume that perhaps the first phase involves painting facades, followed by other initiatives—ensuring it goes beyond mere facade painting to become a truly holistic undertaking.

I believe that, for many decades now, the center of Veracruz has failed to live up to its historical significance. A significant effort was made right here on these streets—and, truth be told, the results were beautiful; the area has been revitalized and brought closer to the standard it deserves. However, there is obviously still work to be done. It is excellent that this effort is being made—that attention is finally being turned toward the Historic Center—because the reality is that not only the people of Veracruz, but all Mexicans, have a duty to preserve it, as it is an integral part of our culture,” he expressed.

Similarly, Sergio Lois pointed out that the burden of rehabilitation work should not fall solely upon the Municipal and State Governments; rather, building owners must also do their part to renovate their properties, many of which have been neglected for several decades.
