A day of action in defense of freedom of expression was held on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, where a counter-monument was installed at the intersection with Bucareli Street to commemorate murdered and disappeared journalists.
During the event, titled “Here Nobody Forgets,” various activities took place, including the participation of active journalists and family members of murdered media workers, as well as musical performances, theater, poetry readings, and film screenings.
At the unveiling of the memorial, Griselda Triana, widow of Javier Valdez, stated that this symbol serves as a reminder to authorities at all levels that violence against journalists in various regions of the country must end.
She affirmed that every journalist who disappears, is silenced, or is threatened represents a truth that is being suppressed, and that 98 percent of crimes against journalists remain unpunished. She added that the disappeared have not returned home.
She emphasized that the counter-monument should shame the leaders who have been unable to stop the violence against journalists.
During this event, family members of several journalists gave testimonies, including the wife of Salvador Adame, who disappeared in Michoacán; Carmelita Osorio, wife of Gregorio Jiménez de la Cruz, a journalist murdered on February 5, 2014, in Veracruz; and Estela Méndez, wife of Ramón Ángeles Zalpa, a journalist who disappeared in Paracho, Michoacán, in 2010.
Also participating were Jorge Sánchez, son of Moisés Sánchez, a Veracruz journalist murdered in January 2015, and Patricia Espinosa, sister of photographer Rubén Espinosa.
