Morena party congresswoman Olga Sánchez Cordero abstained from supporting the reform promoted by the ruling party to allow the annulment of elections due to foreign interference, arguing that the initiative “undermines the principle of certainty.”

During the discussion in the Constitutional Affairs Committee, Sánchez Cordero stated that the proposal is an “open-ended rule” that can be interpreted in multiple ways and filled “with any number of normative assumptions.”

The former Secretary of the Interior’s stance drew criticism from supporters of the Fourth Transformation, who considered that her abstention weakened an initiative promoted by sectors within Morena to combat alleged foreign interference in electoral processes.

The debate took place while Congress is discussing constitutional changes related to electoral annulment and foreign intervention, a proposal that has also generated internal divisions within the ruling party.
