With 25 votes in favor and none against, the 65th Legislature of the State of Zacatecas approved the establishment of May 15th as the “State Day of the Horseback Rider of the Zacatecas Semidesert.”

The approved resolution states the objective of recognizing and preserving the tradition of horseback riding in the Zacatecas semidesert region, considered a deeply rooted cultural and historical expression in various communities of the state.

According to the document read by Representative José David González Hernández before the full Congress, horseback riding represents “a living manifestation of identity, community life, and cultural heritage.”

The legislative document indicates that this commemoration also aims to promote cultural, recreational, and tourism activities related to the Zacatecas semidesert, as well as encourage the participation of municipalities and equestrian organizations.

The statement of purpose notes that horseback riding is part of “popular expressions that have survived the passage of time,” preserving historical elements linked to rural life and traditional activities in the Zacatecas semi-desert.

It also highlights that these activities not only have a recreational component but also represent spaces for community gatherings and the strengthening of the social fabric in various towns throughout the state.

Furthermore, it argues that the commemoration will allow for “the preservation and dissemination of equestrian customs and traditions” among new generations, as well as the promotion of cultural and tourism activities related to the semi-desert region.
