Puebla leads in screwworm cases in dogs; totals more than 100 cases

The state of Puebla has become the Mexican state with the highest number of active screwworm infestation cases in dogs, recording 105 canine infections as of May 27. This figure represents 15% of the 687 active cases detected in dogs nationwide, meaning nearly one out of every six cases in Mexico is located in Puebla.

According to data from Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the state currently has 219 active screwworm cases affecting various animal species. This places Puebla in first place nationwide, ahead of states such as Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí.

Dogs Are the Most Affected Species

Although screwworm infestation is commonly associated with livestock, dogs are currently the most affected species in Puebla. Of the 219 active cases reported in the state, nearly half involve canines.

The municipalities reporting the highest number of canine cases are:

  • Cuetzalan: 9
  • Zacatlán: 9
  • Puebla City: 8
  • Pahuatlán: 7
  • Xicotepec: 7

Screwworm is a parasitic infestation that affects mammals, including dogs and cats. The insect lays its eggs in open wounds, and the larvae feed on living tissue. If left untreated, the condition can cause severe infections and may even become fatal.

Sierra Norte Concentrates Most Cases

Overall, active cases in Puebla are concentrated primarily in the Sierra Norte region.

The municipalities with the highest number of reported cases across all species are:

  • Tetela de Ocampo: 19
  • Pahuatlán: 17
  • Zacatlán: 11
  • Hueytamalco: 11
  • Cuetzalan: 9
  • Xicotepec: 9

Authorities have also reported active cases in other animal species:

  • 57 cattle
  • 36 pigs
  • 11 horses
  • 5 goats
  • 4 sheep
  • 1 bird

More Than One Thousand Cases Recorded in Puebla

Historical data also places Puebla among the states most affected by this disease. Between November 20, 2024, and May 27, 2026, the state accumulated a total of 1,081 screwworm cases.

Nationwide, there are currently 2,035 active cases, with Puebla accounting for approximately 11% of the total.

The states with the highest cumulative number of cases are:

  • Chiapas: 6,864
  • Oaxaca: 4,133
