Mexico City has registered two cases of myiasis, or screwworm infestation, in humans, located in the southern part of the city, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).
In its “Report on Active Cases of Screwworm Infestation in Mexico” as of May 27, corresponding to epidemiological week 21, the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) details that the two cases were diagnosed in the Tlalpan borough, in the south of the capital.
This borough borders Coyoacán, where the Banorte Stadium is located, the venue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening in just two weeks.
Before the screwworm infestation was detected in humans, cases were reported in dogs in early May. However, authorities stated that these were isolated cases.
Then, the government of Clara Brugada announced that prevention and monitoring measures would be implemented in the boroughs of Tlalpan, Xochimilco, and Milpa Alta, including diagnosis, quarantine, and epidemiological follow-up.
On May 28, the Ministry of Health (SSA) called on the public to reinforce preventative measures against myiasis caused by the screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax), a disease that can affect both animals and people.
It explained that this disease is caused by the larva of the screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax), which has the ability to invade open wounds to feed on living tissue.
Therefore, it added that proper care of any skin lesion is one of the main protective measures. And it recommended the following preventative measures:
Cuts, scrapes, or bites should be washed immediately with soap and water, properly disinfected, and kept covered with sterile gauze or bandages until healed, as flies seek out these types of wounds to lay their eggs.
Maintain good personal hygiene, especially for children, the elderly, people with limited or no mobility, vulnerable individuals, and those who have frequent contact with animals.
Wear protective clothing: long sleeves and pants, when working outdoors or near animals.
Use approved insect repellents on skin and clothing to prevent flies.
Regularly check pets, paying particular attention to their ears, paws, tail, muzzle, and fur to detect wounds, irritation, or skin lesions early. If any are found, clean and protect the affected area, and take the animal to a licensed veterinarian immediately. Prevent the animal from licking or scratching the affected area.

The Ministry of Health (SSA) issued a warning about the following warning signs that require immediate attention:
Presence of maggots in wounds
