Heavy rain fell in the municipality of Zapotitlán on Tuesday afternoon, causing a landslide on the Tehuacán-Huajuapan federal highway. State Civil Protection personnel were called in to clear the debris blocking the road.
In less than an hour, the rain softened the ground, triggering landslides on the highway. Drivers reported that enormous rocks had fallen in the area, making it necessary to close the road.
It was reported that just meters from the landfill between Santa María Coapan and Santa Ana Teloxtoc, a huge rock fell onto a piece of construction equipment being transported on a flatbed truck. While no one was injured, the damage was considerable.
Approximately one kilometer before reaching the junction leading to the Helia Bravo Hollins Museum, a large boulder was also left blocking the road. Civil Protection personnel from Zapotitlán and the State Regional Civil Protection were needed to remove the debris.
Early this morning, municipal personnel inspected the road to identify any further hazards for drivers. They indicated that there was no longer any danger and that a review would be conducted on the section under the municipality’s jurisdiction should the rains continue in the area.
On Wednesday morning, Zapotitlán Public Safety personnel reported that a house within the town had also been affected by the rain. Part of a perimeter wall was damaged after flooding, but the house was already receiving assistance from the authorities.
