The hurricane season in the eastern Pacific has meteorological authorities on high alert after Tropical Storm Boris approached the southern coast of Mexico, while Tropical Depression Three-E intensified into Tropical Storm Cristina.

Conagua (the National Water Commission) warned that Boris’s outer bands will bring torrential rains of 150 to 250 millimeters to parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, as well as heavy rainfall in Colima, Jalisco, and Michoacán.

The system has maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour and is moving slowly east-northeast at 6 km/h. Authorities reported that, following an adjustment to the storm’s center, the impact forecast was revised and is now expected in the early hours of Tuesday, June 9.

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), as of noon on Monday, June 8, Boris was located 195 kilometers south-southeast of Acapulco and 130 kilometers south-southwest of Punta Maldonado, Guerrero. Heavy rains are also expected in Mexico City and Morelos.

The agency indicated that the storm will generate “winds of 60 to 80 km/h with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h along the coast of Guerrero,” as well as waves of 4 to 5 meters along the coasts of Michoacán, Guerrero, and Oaxaca. Authorities warned of possible landslides, river flooding, and inundation in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Three-E intensified on Monday and strengthened into Tropical Storm Cristina. Its center is located 600 kilometers east-southeast of the mouth of the Suchiate River and 160 kilometers west-southwest of Managua, Nicaragua.

According to Conagua, Cristina has sustained winds of 75 km/h and gusts of 95 km/h, moving north at 7 km/h. “At the moment, it is not generating any effects in Mexico,” the agency stated, although it will continue to be monitored for any changes in its trajectory or intensity.
