Thousands of soccer fans flocked to Malecón Tajamar in Cancún to witness a historic event: Mexico hosting the FIFA World Cup for the third time, facing South Africa.

The first of the more than five thousand people who arrived did so at 10:00 a.m., two hours before the official start of the Fut Fest, organized by the Quintana Roo government and the municipality of Benito Juárez.

Although the Mexican national team, “El Tri,” was the star of the day, this didn’t stop foreign visitors from leaving the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean to head to Malecón Tajamar, where they mingled with local fans, demonstrating why soccer is the most beautiful sport in the world.

“There are tourists from the United States, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, from all over the world. The tourists who came here were recommended by agencies, hotel associations, and digital platforms; they’re the ones who shared it,” said Juan Pablo de Zulueta, head of the Benito Juárez Municipal Tourism Office.

Doing the wave, singing, dancing, and cheering, people of all nationalities enjoyed this part of the World Cup, which will be available in Cancún for the next few weeks, as 50 matches will be shown.

Although the sun held off, the rain didn’t let up and made its presence felt; however, nobody moved. The excitement was so great that the shouts could be heard meters and meters away from the Malecón, where hundreds more watched the game in restaurants and even on their cell phones.

Moments after the final whistle, the crowd headed towards the “El Cevivhe” roundabout, located in the heart of Cancun, where the hope was revived that the team led by Javier Aguirre could play the long-awaited fifth game.
