Turnout was low at the FEX complex for the opening of the Baja Fut Fest Mexcali.
Starting at 10:30 a.m., buses could be seen arriving at the event site on Río Nuevo Boulevard. Dozens of people began entering, passing through the designated outdoor viewing area to reach the FEX palenque (arena), where the air conditioning was running.
The seats gradually began to fill up during the World Cup opening ceremony, which featured performances by artists such as Maná, Shakira, J Balvin, and Dany Ocean, among others.
However, by the time Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio blew his whistle to start the first match of the 2026 World Cup, the venue was barely at a quarter of its capacity.
As the match progressed, the FEX arena never even reached half-capacity; nevertheless, despite the low turnout, those present were enthusiastic about watching the Mexican national team play.
Regarding municipal officials, only a few were in attendance: Fire Chief Rubén Darío Osuna, who was overseeing his team’s operations; Mexicali City Councilman Alfredo Wong; FEX Director Sandra González; and COTUCO Mexicali Director María de los Ángeles Murillo. Notably, Mayor Norma Bustamante Martínez did not attend, despite the event having been widely publicized.
