Changes in Fuel Prices in Mexico

Following the elimination of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the National Energy Commission (CNE) became the sole regulatory body for Mexico’s energy sector in March 2025. The objective of this technical organization is to regulate, supervise, and impose sanctions on activities related to the energy sector.

The CNE’s mission is to guarantee sovereignty, security, and self-sufficiency in the energy sector in accordance with policies established by the Ministry of Energy (Sener). According to information from the Government of Mexico, the organization’s main activities regarding hydrocarbons include:

  • Regulating prices and tariffs.
  • Granting permits for the storage, transportation, and sale of gasoline.
  • Maintaining a public and updated registry of all these activities.

The organization does not work independently. It coordinates with Sener while maintaining technical and operational autonomy to ensure that all decisions are based on professional criteria.

The final price of gasoline is determined by production, distribution, logistics, taxes, and the price of hydrocarbons in international markets. Fuels are a very important component of the economy and play a significant role in determining inflation in every country.

At the beginning of 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum and the business sector signed an agreement aimed at ensuring that Magna gasoline would cost no more than 24 pesos per liter.
