Exactly 25 inmates from the Aguaruto prison in Sinaloa were transferred to other facilities on the morning of Thursday, June 18, under the supervision of state and federal authorities.
In this regard, Sinaloa’s interim governor, Yeraldine Bonilla Valverde, explained that the transfer of individuals incarcerated for federal offenses from the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center is part of a security strategy led by federal authorities.
Federal and state forces carried out operations in the municipalities of Culiacán and Navolato, resulting in the arrest of seven alleged members.
What did Yeraldine Bonilla say?
The state leader explained that such movements are analyzed by the Security Council and follow strategies defined by the federal government; consequently, the state government does not determine which inmates are transferred or to which penitentiary centers they are sent.
“I was aware of it; however, I do not know the list of who is involved,” she commented when asked about the operation conducted that Thursday morning.
Bonilla noted that there is only one federal prison in Sinaloa, while the remaining penitentiary centers fall under state jurisdiction; therefore, the transfer of federal inmates is the responsibility of federal authorities.
“Those changes are strictly matters handled between the State Secretariat of Public Security and the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR). The State Government has no involvement in those movements,” she maintained.
When asked if the transfers would continue in the coming days, she replied that such information rests with the federal agencies designing the security strategy.
“I do not know if they will continue; I only know that these are strategies originating from the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic and the secretariats,” she stated.
Late last month, a brawl occurred inside the Aguaruto prison in Culiacán, resulting in several inmates being injured or killed, according to the Sinaloa Secretariat of Public Security. The agency stated that the clash took place within one of the prison facility’s units and that the situation was immediately brought under control by security personnel.
Authorities indicated that the unit where the altercation occurred has been secured and remains under guard to ensure the safety of the rest of the inmate population.
Although injuries and fatalities have been confirmed, the exact number and identities of the victims have not yet been specified; however, it is estimated that there may be at least seven.
The Secretariat of Public Security reported that prison authorities immediately notified the State Attorney General’s Office so that it could carry out the necessary proceedings and investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
