The expansion of the railway bridge over Bernardo Quintana, part of the Mexico City-Querétaro train project, is about to begin, coinciding with the arrival of the summer vacation period, with the goal of minimizing the impact on traffic in the capital, reported the state’s Secretary of Government, Eric Gudiño Torres.
He added that once the start date is finalized, a special traffic management plan will be announced to maintain vehicular flow in the area.
“A traffic management plan will be implemented to allow for traffic flow; that is, there will be traffic, but the work has to be done,” he stated.
The official explained that planning meetings are currently underway between state and federal authorities and specialists to determine the exact start date for the work, as well as the measures that will allow traffic to continue flowing on one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.
“This is a project that will not completely interrupt traffic on Bernardo Quintana. It will likely reduce traffic, but it will not be a complete stop,” he commented.
He clarified that the project only involves expanding the existing infrastructure to allow the railway to have four tracks, without needing to demolish the current bridge.
“What will be done is to widen the bridge… there will be no destruction of the bridge, simply an expansion,” he said.
The Mexico-Querétaro train project will be reviewed with the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu).
Gudiño Torres acknowledged that any project of this magnitude causes disruption for motorists, so they are working on a strategy to minimize the impact.
According to the secretary, the intention is to complete the work as quickly as possible due to the importance of Bernardo Quintana for metropolitan mobility. He noted that other large-scale railway projects have required several months of construction, so they are seeking to avoid prolonged congestion at this location.
