Mexican companies will have a new opportunity to expand their international presence following the entry into force of the United Kingdom’s Accession Protocol to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a measure that opens preferential access to a market of more than 68 million consumers and strengthens the country’s trade diversification.

The United Kingdom’s accession was formally completed on June 22 through provisions published in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

With this step, Mexico gains new trade opportunities with one of the world’s most important economies, at a time when companies are seeking to reduce risks associated with concentrating exports in a single destination.

The United Kingdom’s entry also expands the scope of the CPTPP, a trade bloc that now brings together economies representing nearly 15 percent of global Gross Domestic Product, strengthening its role in international trade.

How Does Mexico Benefit from the United Kingdom’s Integration into the CPTPP?

The United Kingdom’s accession represents an opportunity for various national productive sectors seeking to expand their presence beyond North America.

The United Kingdom is currently the sixth-largest economy in the world and maintains strong demand for imported goods, ranging from food and beverages to manufactured products, medical devices, industrial goods, and specialized services.

Among the sectors that could benefit the most is the agri-food industry.

Mexican products such as beef, pork, avocados, berries, tequila, beer, honey, coffee, and processed foods would have greater opportunities to compete in the British market under improved trade conditions.

The manufacturing industry also appears to be one of the areas with strong potential to take advantage of the expanded agreement.

Companies involved in auto parts, electronics, medical devices, and advanced manufacturing could use this new trade gateway to diversify markets and expand business opportunities.

The significance of this opening becomes especially important because approximately 80 percent of Mexican exports currently go to the United States, making access to new international buyers an alternative for reducing dependence on a single market.

A New Stage for Mexican Foreign Trade Through the United Kingdom Market

Beyond direct trade with the United Kingdom, the British integration into the CPTPP strengthens Mexico’s strategic position within the global economy.

The country maintains preferential access to North America through the USMCA and also has agreements that facilitate trade with European markets.

The United Kingdom’s arrival in the trans-Pacific bloc further expands that trade network and enhances Mexico’s attractiveness to international investors.

This scenario coincides with the growth of nearshoring, a phenomenon that has increased interest among foreign companies in establishing productive operations in Mexican territory to take advantage of its geographic location and trade agreements.

States with strong export activity such as Nuevo León, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Sonora, Veracruz, Yucatán, and Querétaro could benefit from the trade expansion.

In some regions, particularly those linked to agribusiness and processed foods, the new conditions could translate into greater growth opportunities.

However, opening new markets also brings challenges.

Companies interested in taking advantage of these benefits will need to comply with increasingly demanding standards related to quality, sustainability, traceability, and international certifications.

The United Kingdom’s entry into the CPTPP represents a new stage for Mexican foreign trade.

Preferential access to an economy of more than 68 million consumers opens significant opportunities, but the challenge for the productive sector will be to turn that potential into increased exports, new investments, and a stronger presence of Mexican products in the British market.
