The Secretary of Government, Víctor Sarmiento Maldonado, defended the ship project being built by the State Government on the Campeche boardwalk, asserting that it is only one part of a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate this public space and strengthen tourism.
It’s worth noting that last month, Adda Solís Peniche, Secretary of Tourism, announced the installation of the new tourist attraction to bring visitors to Campeche. The sculpture is a replica of a shipyard ship, representing an investment of nearly 10 million pesos.
In a press conference, the Secretary of Government maintained that the criticism has focused on a minor element of a much larger project, whose objective is to transform the boardwalk into an attraction for local, national, and international visitors.
“When they bring up the little ship, they’re talking about a tiny detail, because we’re going to renovate the entire boardwalk. We’re going to illuminate it, plant vegetation, paint it, rehabilitate the walkways, and there will be shows and folkloric groups. It’s a complete, comprehensive project,” he stated.
Sarmiento Maldonado highlighted that tourism indicators reflect significant growth for Campeche, making it necessary to invest in infrastructure to strengthen the state’s offerings.
He also announced that the private sector will soon reactivate the pirate ship Lorencillo, which will once again offer tours of the bay as part of the new tourist attractions.
“The private sector will put the Lorencillo back into service for tours along the boardwalk. It’s a comprehensive project. The ship currently under construction is just one small part of what will be done to attract tourism,” he stated.
The secretary asserted that Campeche has a historic opportunity to consolidate itself as a tourist destination thanks to the rise of the Maya Route and the Maya Train, which, he said, have placed the region on the radar of visitors from around the world.
In this context, he emphasized the importance of the legacy of the Mayan civilization, considering it among the most significant cultures in the history of humankind.
He reiterated that the works on the boardwalk are part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the urban image and increase the supply of recreational activities.
