Two alleged U.S. military personnel reportedly attempted to enter Mexican territory armed via the Córdova-Américas International Bridge, where they were detained by members of the National Guard.
However, after being held for several hours at the facilities of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), they were released following the intervention of authorities from both countries. The case was handled with complete secrecy, despite President Claudia Sheinbaum’s recent speech on defending national sovereignty. The two men were intercepted Friday morning as they attempted to enter Mexico carrying firearms, according to anonymous sources.

They remained in the custody of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) while various procedures were carried out. During this time, the arrival at the federal facilities of the administrator of the Ciudad Juárez Customs Office, Fernando Martínez García, as well as personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and later, officials from the United States Consulate, was observed. Shortly before 2:40 p.m., both left the facilities in a gray Toyota pickup truck with diplomatic plates, owned by the SRE and assigned to the U.S. consular representation, to return to the neighboring country. When contacted by El Diario, SRE personnel, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the incident was due to an “unintentional border crossing” and that, once the situation was reported, Mexico and the United States “followed the established procedures that both countries follow in these types of cases.” However, the agency did not specify what this procedure entails nor explain the legal basis on which the Americans were released hours after their detention.

This incident occurs in a context where President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly stated that the relationship with the United States must be based on strict respect for national sovereignty and that she will not allow any acts that violate Mexican jurisdiction. Despite this, as of press time, no federal authority had issued an official statement regarding the entry of the alleged armed soldiers, the weapons they were carrying, or the legal actions taken after their arrest.
