The members of the Mexican National Team will return the expensive watches they each received as gifts from an American influencer after their 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32 of the World Cup on Tuesday.
The Mexican National Football Team “informs that, by mutual agreement, our players decided to return the watches that content creator ‘Steve Will Do It’ had given them on his own initiative,” the team stated in a message posted Friday on its social media account.
After El Tri’s victory against Ecuador, the players were surprised by content creator Steve Will Do It, a popular American YouTuber and influencer known for his extreme challenge and gambling videos. During a visit to the Mexican team’s training center, he presented each player with a watch from a luxury brand.
On his social media, the influencer said he gave “an expensive watch to each player/member of the coaching staff of the Mexican team.” In a previous post, he explained that he had bet two million dollars on a Mexican victory and that, if confirmed, he would pocket 1.2 million dollars.
He emphasized, however, that “between the watches I bought for each player and staff member of the Mexican team and the tickets to the match, I’ll break even if Mexico wins!” revealing the high price he spent on the gifts.
The gift quickly ignited social media and sparked a wave of criticism, leading the Mexican Football Federation to announce the return of the presents. The measure aims to avoid potential FIFA sanctions due to possible regulatory conflicts of interest.
