Mexico Recorded 2,507 Earthquakes During June 2026
According to Mexico’s National Seismological Service (SSN), 2,507 earthquakes with epicenters within Mexican territory were recorded during June 2026.
The earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 1.1 to 6.1 and were primarily concentrated in:
- Chiapas
- Oaxaca
- Guerrero
- Michoacán
- Colima
- Jalisco
Additional seismic activity was recorded in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the Gulf of California.
Strongest Earthquake of the Month
The strongest earthquake of the month was a magnitude 6.1 event that occurred on June 30 at 1:45 p.m.
Its epicenter was located in the Gulf of California, approximately 116 kilometers southwest of Guasave, Sinaloa.
According to the SSN, the earthquake was associated with a strike-slip fault featuring a normal fault component.
Earthquakes in Guerrero and Continued Seismic Activity
On June 5, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred 27 kilometers southwest of Ometepec, Guerrero.
Another magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded on June 13, 27 kilometers west of San Marcos, Guerrero.
Earthquakes in Yucatán
Two earthquakes were also recorded in Yucatán:
- June 8 at 10:05 a.m. — Magnitude 4.2
- June 9 at 4:19 a.m. — Magnitude 3.6
Both earthquakes occurred northeast of Ticul.
Mexico’s Most Active Seismic Regions
The areas with the highest seismic activity in Mexico are located along the Pacific coast, where the Cocos, Rivera, and North American tectonic plates interact.
This tectonic activity produces frequent earthquakes in states such as:
- Guerrero
- Oaxaca
- Chiapas
The National Seismological Service (SSN) continuously monitors these events, recording their magnitude, location, and depth. This information plays an important role in earthquake monitoring, emergency preparedness, and civil protection efforts throughout Mexico.
Authorities recommend staying informed through official government channels for updates regarding seismic activity across the country.
